When looking into the matter of how to encourage newcomers to compete in circuit racing, one word kept coming up: “daunting”. You’ve picked up your Go Racing Motorsport UK starter pack; completed your ARDS test. Yet, even so, your trepidation about actually making it real is understandable.
But we have some good news for you. Firstly, circuit racing clubs will be very glad to have you. “We’re very conscious that our industry only survives if we can regenerate the market place which means bringing new people into circuit racing,” the British Racing and Sports Car Club’s formulae development chief Greg Graham tells Motorsport News. “So we give them a really easy access point [and] a focused approach.”
James Winstanley, communications manager of the 750 Motor Club, agrees. “It’s the constant goal,” he tells MN of attracting newcomers. “With motorsport there is always a percentage of turnover because at club level it is a big time and financial commitment. We need to be replacing everybody with something new coming in; ideally more coming in than going out.”
