It’s derby day in the Swiss city of Lausanne. Inside the Stade Olympique de la Pontaise, Stade Lausanne Ouchy’s hardy ultras are being drowned out by their rivals from Lausanne-Sport, but on the pitch the city’s smaller club look a better bet for promotion this season.
Lausanne lies on the shores of Geneva and, when it comes to sport, is more usually associated with the Olympics, with the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee located in the city. The two local football teams are less high profile, playing in the country’s second tier. SLO only turned full-time four years ago but go into the Swiss Challenge League game in third place, six points and one place ahead of Lausanne-Sport.
At one level, the game is a derby between Lausanne’s two biggest clubs, and a key clash in the race for promotion. But it is also a contest between two extremely rich men and their differing approaches
