There’s a tradition that exists within Amish communities whereby the youths are granted a free pass to deviate from the strict mandates of the fellowship, in order to blow off steam — it’s called Rumspringa. The idea, in essence, is to allow the Amish 16 year-olds an opportunity to misbehave, to experience the glitz and sins of life outside the commune; wearing fashionable clothes, drinking, smoking, orchestrating illicit adolescent fumblings, to get it all out of their systems before embarking upon a lifetime of clean-living and devotion.
