Transport for Wales introduces Class 231 fleet

TRANSPORT for Wales No. 231007 made the fleet’s passenger debut on January 18, when it formed the 2P00 05.46 Cardiff Central-Penarth.

The four-car diesel electric multiple unit, built by Stadler, was the first of the 11-strong fleet to enter traffic. As this issue of RE went to press, six of the trains (Nos. 231001/002/004/006/007/010) had carried passengers while the others continued to undergo testing as well as being used for staff training.

Initially only one ‘231’ per day was in passenger use, however on February 4, that doubled to two trains per day. TfW expects enough trains to
