‘The street that stole my heart’

WHO LIVES HERE? Pieter Hoffman

WHERE Carnarvon, Great Karoo

SIZE 106m2, including front stoep

“I’m a sucker,” says Pieter Hoffman unequivocally about the nagmaalhuisie (communion cottage) with the unusual Scandinavian name Svenskbo that he bought in September 2021 in his hometown, Carnarvon.

“When I came to view this place, it wasn’t just the cottage that caught my attention but the entire historic Church Street. And then the street crept into my heart and I wanted to rescue as many of its cottages as possible,”

And that’s how Pieter ended up buying four more in Church Street. “Back in 2017, I decided that I was done with renovations in Carnarvon,” he says with a ‘what-can-a-man-do’ look on his face. Because, after all, he already has 26 guest rooms in town, all of which were in run-down houses that he’s meticulously restored.
