I was a test case in the Pony Racing Authority’s Youth Training Scheme, which gets people from non-horsey families into racing. I’d learned to ride when I was 11, and I’d soon caught the bug. All through primary school, I never knew what I wanted to do. But pony racing became a passion that verged on obsession.
At first, like many youngsters, I wanted to be a jockey. I soon realised, though, there are
