SOUTHWOLD, SUFFOLK
Full house
It’s always a bit of a challenge to even list the number of projects going on at Harbour Services Marine in its idyllic corner of Suffolk, so busy is the yard. “We’ve usually got around 15 boats in”, as yard owner John Buckley tells us. Two of their recent projects were shortlisted in our awards this year in this issue. The first of these is the 35ft (10.7m) Kim Holman yawl, built by Whisstocks in nearby Woodbridge in 1959. The “major restoration” included new decks, deckbeams, carlins, beamshelf, chainplates, a thorough strip of all coatings and repaint and varnish, and a rerig of standing rigging (including new spreaders) and running rigging. The other is the unusual twin screw motor yacht , a McGruer 41 that arrived in lockdown for a big restoration that included replanking, new carlins and beamshelf, new deck beams, new aft cockpit, engines, wiring, tankage, heads, mast, galley, wet room, portlights and more. She has been, and remains, in the same family for several generations. The 1937 Silverleaf motor yacht (pictured below) is in for new engines, tankage, strip and revarnish and a general refit. The 1929 Dunkirk Little Ship , a 32ft Thornycroft motor yacht, is in for routine maintenance, modifications and some repairs, including to the sides of her cabin trunk, and some strengthening work in the form of new structural floors, keel shoe and keelbolts. an open launch built by Frank Maynard of Chiswick in London in 1922, is coming to the end of a complete rebuild and has had a Jaguar straight six from an E Type installed to power her! The 1957 twin-screw diesel yacht , designed by Guthrie Penmam, better known for his sailing dinghies, has been in for a new galley and heads and is now being stripped and refinished for the 2023 season. She was first registered to the war hero Geoffrey ‘Buster’ Briggs. The yard also has three 25ft Andrews slipper launches in at the moment: , in for repairs (not to mention the 20 coats of varnish); in for a strip and revarnish, engine service, new upholstery and covers; and , which has had much of the hull replaced, along with new mahogany decks. “She will possibly be one of the best examples of an original Andrews slipper launch when she is completed and offered for sale by Andrews Boathouses”, said John. The other two will also be for sale once completed.
