BRIDLINGTON, YORKSHIRE
Pilot cobles Venus and Viking to be restored
The oldest surviving traditional north-east coast coble will be restored to full sail, 121 years after her launch, . Built in Hartlepool as a six-plank pilot coble in 1900, she has survived the rigours of time and a watery grave. The Bridlington Sailing Coble Preservation Society (BSCPS) is living up to its name, after prolonged negotiations with Hartlepool Borough Council to receive both this boat, , as well as , a double-ended pilot boat, as, over a true coble. She was last restored in 1992 by Dave Wharton of Whitby and painted in the traditional pilot boat colour of black with her registered number of 28H on her bows. Little is known about the origins of but she had obviously worked on the River Tees and was possibly built c1908. is already in the BSCPS workshop and a start has been made on her restoration by John Clarkson, retired local coble builder, and his team of volunteers. Once she’s complete, work will begin on .
