The perineum is the small wedge-shaped fleshy area between the vagina and the anus. It is here that the muscles surrounding the vaginal entrance and the anus meet the muscles running from the side walls of the pelvis. During childbirth, the tissues of the perineum will fan out and stretch as your baby’s head is born. During pregnancy, these muscles need to be strong and flexible in order to support the growing baby as well as the internal organs.
