After several false starts due to the recent pandemic, the VVC’s Cherbourg Rally in Normandy finally became a reality. Our Rosie and myself arrived early after driving through the night to meet the small VVC invasion force amassed at Poole ferry port ready to board the ferry service to Cherbourg (a four and a half hour crossing) to rendezvous with the advance party, who’d already set up base camp at the Sandaya l’Anse du Brick five-star campsite.

Disembarking at the port feeling refreshed, we were surprised by the ease of getting through passport control and customs. This was our first European venture as ‘foreigners’; we even got a smile from the Gendarmerie (which could have been a grimace from trapped wind after the garlic escargot baguette he’d eaten for his déjeuner).
