ROSES DU SUD

BEHIND THE QUILT

DANS LE JARDIN

“The Rose of Sharon block has always been one of my favourite blocks. It can be placed on point or just as a square, and the repetition of the design makes it easy on the eye. When I start a quilt, I use fabrics from my stash – having enough to choose from – for this one, a friend of mine had given me the perfect piece for the centre of the big flowers... or so I thought!

“After making my four big blocks, I then realised I was missing four little bits to make a fifth block. And that’s when thinking outside the box came in. I had been to a quilt show where Kathy Doughty, a wonderful Australian designer, was demonstrating how to use leftover fabric from shapes, which gave me the idea for the centre block. Often, quilts have a mind of their own and the designer has to follow their lead!” – Véronique Diligent

You will need

■ Background fabric – 1¾yds* or sixteen (16) 12in squares in various prints for a scrappy look for the outer four (4) blocks
