CANARIES

EVERY year, I am amazed just how quickly we have arrived at December. It seems that no sooner have the shows started and our birds moulted, than we are preparing to wrap up operations, to overwinter our birds and begin conditioning them for breeding again next season.

My thoughts are never far from the breeding season. As soon as my current crop of youngsters have emerged from their moult, I am considering whether I can use them in my next breeding team and which partner will suit them best.

My surplus birds have all found new homes, bar the couple of “spares” I like to retain against accidents. Many years ago, I learned that it was sometimes the brothers and sisters
