While the classic scooter scene was going through a strong revival in the late 1990s, no one was prepared for the new wave of automatic scooters that would dare to challenge the monopoly of Vespa and Lambretta. Gone were the days of ugly-looking, squared-off 50cc commuter autos. This new breed were more powerful and stylish machines that were capable of lightning acceleration and were fitted with hydraulic disc brakes. It was as if the scooter market had been invaded by sports motorcycles. The likes of the Gilera Runner and the Peugeot Speedfight led the invasion, and thanks to their affordable prices introduced a new generation of enthusiasts into the world of scooter ownership.
