Big Fun in the Bahamas

Bonefish guide Andy Smithfirst guided in 1978, when he was only eleven, but he wasmost famous bonefish fly ever designed—the Crazy Charlie, a small fly first tied of chicken feathers and metal beads from a disassembled military dog-tag necklace. And two of his brothers have opened bonefishing lodges in the Bahamas. He’s witnessed the meteoric rise of saltwater fly fishing and the craze of Bahamian bonefishing, but he’s hardly in the shadow of his father. Smith is known for a dedicated pursuit of trophy-sized bonefish “not by luck but by design,” he says, and he’s built his Broad Shad Cay Lodge, on the North Bight of Andros Island, specifically for that purpose.
