I had no gardening knowledge before starting on this garden – I just learned as I’ve gone along

Anthony Manning was one of several gardeners who entered the competition with a garden full of tropical plants. But what really impressed our judges was how densely layered and healthy his tender plants were. And his incredible hard landscaping – all designed and built by himself – really shows his dedication and passion for creating an outdoor space that Anthony, his wife Helen and their two sons can enjoy all year round.

What was the garden like when you moved here?

We literally started with a blank canvas. It was maybe a six foot slope all the way
