A lone Steinway stands centre stage in Hamburg’s magnificent Elbphilharmonie. The lid is removed so that the audience – seated in all corners of the hall’s irregular hexagon – can best view the keys. Above the piano hangs a huge, blank screen. The lights go down, the side door opens – but where’s our soloist? The screen comes to life and Lang Lang appears. He’s seated in a studio on the outskirts of Hamburg, in front of another Steinway. He gives us a cheery greeting, turns to the keys, and plays a song from his latest Disney album (previewed in Pianist 128).
