FEATURE: HOUSE-PROUD ARGUS PHEASANTS

THESE amazing birds inhabit the Malay Peninsula, Southern Tenasserim, Sumatra and Siam. They resemble a small turkey hen both in size, shape and movement, and their lives are spent in dense forest, seldom higher than 2,000-3,000 feet above sea level.

The male prefers to live in solitude and is only visited by the hens when they require his services. At other times the hen seems to wander rather aimlessly on her own – spinsterish both in appearance and habits.

The cocks are always to be found in the vicinity of their dancing ground. This is a space in dense forest measuring several yards in diameter which is invariably cleared by the birds of all
