IN DECEMBER 2021, Category 5 Super Typhoon Odette (“Typhoon Rai)”, a powerful and catastrophic tropical cyclone, struck the Philippines. It caused severe and widespread damage throughout the southern islands of the archipelago, pounding the island of Palawan before departing the country.

In Palawan’s northern half, many locations were badly affected, including the main city, Puerto Princesa. 139,000 houses were damaged, 630,000 people were displaced, at least 41 areas were flooded, 227 municipalities experienced power outages, and 135 had telecommunication failures.

The impact on people and infrastructure was widely reported in the media, but what happened to the natural habitats and their wild inhabitants, especially the Critically Endangered Philippine cockatoo (), which is endemic to the Philippines and with Palawan as its stronghold?
