ONE OF THE world's largest macaws, the great green macaw (Ara ambiguus) is a magnificent sight in the forest, whether flying, feeding or simply resting. Alarmingly, such sightings have become so much less frequent that in 2020 the species was officially re-categorised in the IUCN Red List from Endangered to Critically Endangered.
Its dire situation is due largely to the loss of forest by conversion to land with other uses; the selective removal of large trees favoured for nesting; and capture for trade, mainly internal. These threats persist throughout its discontinuous geographical
