CANON DSLRs come with a viewfinder blocker on the camera strap that you can attach to prevent light leaking in through the viewfinder during a long exposure. If you forget yours, simply cover the viewfinder with some duct tape or drape a lens cloth over it.
composing on a tripod, it’s best to switch off any image stabilization because the tripod is totally stable anyway.
