Earlier this year, Emma Shannon, 39, was playing a friendly game of tip when her right knee suddenly bent like a banana. There was a loud, crunching noise and she fell to the ground, her knee swelling before her eyes. Later, an MRI confirmed her worst fears: she'd ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).
“I felt sick,” says Emma, a personal assistant. At 15, she'd torn the ACL in her left knee, so she knew what lay ahead – surgery followed by a long recovery. She was sure her only option was a knee reconstruction.
