Head down. Teeth gritted. Cadence up. There’s another triathlete ahead of me and I can see him slowing down as he starts to climb. He’s in my sights and I’m feeling good. It’s time to make my move. I check over my shoulder, put the power down and pull out for the overtake. It’s all going well and I’m making progress, but then I hear an engine growl behind me. “Hurry up, you p***k!” I’m being heckled by a boy racer as he overtakes me. It’s not quite the encouragement I’m hoping for from the locals. Unperturbed, I let out a laugh and carry on slogging away to complete my own overtake. It’s only a short hill, but we’ve tackled most of the elevation on the bike leg already and I know that the biggest challenge of my day is yet to come. A 10km trail run over dirt and sand.
I’m 45K into a 58km bike leg at the Sandman team in spring 2021 my focus has switched to tri. Unfortunately, that first season was pretty much a write-off after I tore the ligaments in my left ankle during a sack race (mark my words, it’s a dangerous sport).
