“Thump. Thump. Thump.” What is that sound? Am I at the start line already? Lining up against the sound of battle drums? Surely not, as I can't feel the wind on my face and don't have any sudden urge to run to the loo. I open my eyes and realise I'm still in bed and have at least another few hours of sleep before having to get up and go through the motions. That noise? That'd be the headache I've been trying to fend off over the past few days while the green shoots of a cold and/or hay fever tried to break through.
When I do eventually get up I convince myself I'm winning the battle and will be fine to race, so go about my business. Over the past few days it's the threat of getting ill and not being able to toe the start line that's dominated my consciousness, so the nerves are unusually absent. But they shouldn't be. Ahead of me
