SLOPING SITES

Q We’re building a home on a sloping site — how can we landscape the garden to create a good connection between our home and the outdoor areas?

A On a sloping site, connecting gardens on various levels is tricky, but it’s also an opportunity to create a variety of complementary outdoor areas. Most people choose to create a number of tiers or terraces, defined by existing topographical features and new floor levels.

You also have the option to create gardens on roofs at lower levels, which could be wild garden sedum roofs or, alternatively, hard landscaped.

Think about making the most of any usable spaces by having each of them cater for the different outside activities, ideally chosen to synergise with the sun’s path around your site. Also give serious thought to how you are going to maintain your multi-level garden.
