MY FIRST hunt for a game animal took place early in the autumn of 2012. Phillip, my new business partner at that time, was the owner of a game farm in the Marken district near Lephalale. Acting as my mentor, he lent me his .300 Win Mag as I had no rifle to my name yet. Our target was a mature blue wildebeest bull. It was midday when we left the house on foot, me carrying the rifle and he the shooting sticks, extra ammunition and binoculars.
Now, let me first clarify a critical fact. At that stage I was a first-timer and did not yet reload my own ammunition as I do today, nor did I have any real concept of the differences in bullet weight, design or loads. A decision was made to load the rifle’s magazine
