As a young, inexperienced hunter I learned this lesson well while accompanying a then well-known South African High Court judge as his guide on a springbuck and black wildebeest hunt. The Free State farm was rather flat, so he hid amid sparse cover next to a pan while I walked in a wide circle to push a large herd of springbuck towards his position. The animals headed straight for the pan and a young female stopped in the open about 160m from him. Strangely, he managed to hit the animal low in a front and hind leg. It headed for a small cement reservoir
