The general premise has been around for centuries, probably millennia, in that you station hunters at ‘stands’ and use beaters to push game through the forests and past the stands. Obviously with so many people in the field high vis is a must, but I never got comfortable shooting with people out in the woods in front of me. Most of the stands are elevated which gives you better vision, but also by design means most of your shots are on a downward angle, reducing the danger to others.
Moose and Whitetail deer are Finland's signature species. They have some of the highest population of moose in the world, though the antlers on the bulls are entirely different to the 70” monsters we see from the Yukon. I'm unfamiliar with the scoring system, but a large Finnish moose might be 35” wide, the record being 45”. In fact the bronze moose at the Sako factory is a model of the Finnish record, taken with Sako ammunition in the 80's if I recall correctly.
The Whitetail were introduced by Finnish immigrants to Minnesota who sent three bucks and four does home in 1934. Unlike NZ these gifts have remained a cherished resource, especially in response to the decline of their moose and Roe deer populations at the time (Side note for if you're doing some research and get confused: Finns refer to moose as elk). The numbers are now booming, with over 100,000 Whitetail spread throughout the nation, and increasing in number and quality every year as more of the countryside transitions from lumber production to agriculture, providing more and better feed.
