David Prutton is a Wing Commander in the Royal Air Force, currently serving at RAF High Wycombe but living in the North East with his wife Kim. A first-time triathlete, he was never under the illusion that he would be competing for places in the Northumbrian.

As I run out of the painfully cold Kielder Water, I’m struck by two things - the absolute beauty of the place and a wave of relief at having got through the 1,900m swim. It’s the bit I was most worried about, but the relief is immediately tempered as I realise I still have 111.000m to cover.

New Year’s Eve 2021 has a lot to answer for. Spurred on by a few too many glasses of wine, the idea of completing a middle-distance triathlon, specifically a brand-new event around the picturesque Kielder Water and stunning Scottish Borders, seemed a fantastic idea, so with friends as witnesses I signed up to The Northumbrian.
