FOOD AND MUSIC PAIRINGS
Warren Conrad
So much is made of pairings. We pair food with wine, wine with chocolate, cheese with wine (God forbid) and whiskey with bread (okay, I made that one up).
How about we pair food with music (either artists or songs)? I think this pairing will be very personal. It’s like a scratch on an LP: It has meaning, but sometimes only to you.
So, here is my attempt at pairing:
Braai sausage with pap and chakalaka – “Vul’Indlela” by Brenda Fassie
Braai with plates, knives, forks and serviettes – “Old Rugged Cross” by Jim Reeves
Bunny chow – “If You Wanna Be Happy” by Dr Victor and the Rasta Rebels
Romany Creams and tea – Anything by The Carpenters
Akhni – the intro music to the movie The Reluctant Fundamentalist (Kangna), by Fareed Ayaz and Abu Muhammad. (Shoutout to Wahida Parker.)
Butter chicken – Anything by Barry White
Pot roast chicken with potatoes – “Jolene” by Dolly Parton
Beef roast – “Aqualung” by Jethro Tull; “Nights in White Satin”, Moody Blues, or “A Whiter Shade of Pale” by Procol Harum
Dhal and rice – “Europa” by Santana
Fish and chips - Anything by Tananas or The Genuines
Trifle – “Home” by Michael Bublé
Bread and butter pudding – “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen
Three shots of Old Brown Sherry – “We will rock you” by Queen. (Shoutout to Dougie Oakes.)
- Theme, Ennio Morricone (Shoutout to Michael Weeder.) Nando’s quarter chicken meal – “25 Or 6 To 4” by Chicago. (Shoutout to Bernie Lawrence.)
