BY ANY standard, covering the years of the LNER throughout its existence from 1923 to 1947 is an ambitious project, as evidenced by the fact that this publication comprises 256 pages and more than 400 black-and-white and colour photographs, writes Geoff Courtney.
John Ryan surely pondered a few questions before putting fingers to keyboard. A chapter for each year, maybe, or for each class of locomotive? Break it up into geographical areas? Or perhaps a heading for each major station?
John, who was born in Doncaster in 1950 and includes in his CV the chairmanship of his home town’s Football League club, came up with a format that, due to the absence of a contents page, I didn’t initially spot. When I did, it made sense, and explained the lack of said contents page. His solution was simple – compile each photograph in the alphabetical order of their locations.
