Inissue number 300, Larkin Poe singer/guitarist Rebecca Lovell gave this piece of advice to aspiring rockers: “Don’t be afraid to colour outside the lines of what you think rock’n’roll should look like.”
And she was dead right. There’s no single way one should look, sound or be in order to make rock music. Although historically a lot of artists have gravitated towards similar tropes and fashions (and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that; we love A-chord boogies, ripped denim and stories of wild excess as much as the next person) these aren’t rules. And anyway, rock’n’roll’s all about breaking rules, surely?
