Ralph Wood bought his basement flat in a Victorian townhouse in Bristol in 2008. It came with an off-street car parking space behind the house, next to a road running parallel to his. He straightaway realised that the space could be used to build a house but didn’t appreciate that it would take a whole 13 years before that house would actually be finished and ready to move into with his partner and their two-year-old son.
