If you’ve been on social media recently, you may already be familiar with the phrase ‘main character energy’, a trend that essentially casts you in the starring role in your life. And though some will write it off as just being self-centred, there’s something to be said for living your life as though you are at the centre of it.
We spoke to clinical psychologist Audrey Katsidzira and international leadership coach Tambu Gomo about this growing trend.
WHAT IS ‘MAIN CHARACTER ENERGY’?
It all started with a TikTok video from user Ashley Ward, posted in early May 2020. In it, she is lying on a beach towel, staring up at the camera while a singsong voiceover proclaims, ‘You have to start romanticising your life. Start thinking of yourself as the main character – because if you don’t, life will continue to pass you by and all the little things that make it so beautiful will continue to go unnoticed.’
