The first production VW commercial vehicle was produced in November 1949, alongside the regular Volkswagen saloons in the main factory at Wolfsburg, Germany. The Transporter combined the advantages of economical performance and reliability already established in the saloon with the multifunctional ability of a commercial vehicle.
