The Mediterranean climate attracts large numbers of tourists, while the Formula One Grand Prix held annually since 1929, adds substantially to visitor numbers and increased volumes of waste requiring collection. The Societe Monegasque D’Assainissement (SMA), is a private company with a history dating back to 1938 when it provided the first waste collection and waste treatment systems in Monaco.
