The Waste Collection System of the Principality of Monaco in the 1980s to the mid 1990s operated by the SMA

The Principality of Monaco stretches over an area of 2.02km (0.78 square miles) and is the second smallest and most densely populated country in the world.

The Mediterranean climate attracts large numbers of tourists, while the Formula One Grand Prix held annually since 1929, adds substantially to visitor numbers and increased volumes of waste requiring collection. The Societe Monegasque D’Assainissement (SMA), is a private company with a history dating back to 1938 when it provided the first waste collection and waste treatment systems in Monaco.

In the 1980s through to the mid-1990s, the SMA provided services for the collection of municipal, commercial and industrial waste as well as dry recyclables, white goods which contained ozone depleting substances known as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs); as well as
