Subdued consumer demand weighs on fresh produce market

In September, the price of tomatoes was substantially higher year-on-year (y/y) due to lower volumes and quality challenges, as a result of pest outbreaks and harsh climatic conditions. The price of onions also increased markedly, due to reduced plantings and poor weather.

At the same time, market stakeholders noted that demand from consumers had declined, as many were resorting to buying only the necessities.

In mid-September, the price of cabbages was 9,4% higher). The price was more than 43% higher y/y due to a decline of about 34% in volumes.
