Tale of a whale

HOW TO SPEAK WHALE: A VOYAGE INTO THE FUTURE OF ANIMAL COMMUNICATION, by Tom Mustill (William Collins Books, $36.99)

The picture is small and clear, although badly reproduced. It shows what appears to be a fluffy white cloud sitting on the ocean. Seawater, water vapour, sky. It is actually a dramatic photograph, taken in Monterey Bay off the Californian coast, of an object and three mammals in collision – a kayak, two kayakers, and the adult humpback whale that landed on top of them.

It appears early and captures a defining moment in the life of its author, Tom Mustill, one of the kayakers.
