I love October – daffodils, lambs, glimpses of summer, Librans everywhere. Sadly, spring bliss comes with complications such as wild weather and academic exams, but these things pass in a flurry of sideways hairdos and nights on NoDoz. So, in the spirit of new life and fresh ideas, this month’s column celebrates the bud-burst of recent musical releases.

When you get to my age, anything after 1989 feels like new music, so there’s a lot to filter. Luckily, I’ve managed to restrict myself to music released this year by women, from home and abroad. And I had to love it.
