Marmite making a comeback
SOUTH Africa’s much-loved Marmite food spread is slowly making its way back to supermarket shelves across the country. “The Marmite production facility has been running stably and delivering on plan in the last month,” says Sihle Mkhize, convenience foods general manager at PepsiCo Sub-Saharan Africa, the brand owners in South Africa.
“The factory has introduced a double shift from April to assist with the demand. Stock is filtering into the trade, but with high demand it will still take a number of weeks to replenish the pipeline,” he adds.
During the pandemic, Marmite fans battled to lay their hands on the smooth, black savoury spread. This was because there was a national shortage of the product since the country went into lock-down in 2020.
