“Our pet shop” is what Desmond calls their farm in the valley, where his parents lived before him. Besides growing soya beans, sugar beans and lucerne, they’ve brought in game, but they only hunt when the numbers become unsustainable.

The holiday resort on the farm is a new venture. “Shortly before the lockdown was announced in March 2020, we bought this piece of land on which DealesRock is located,” Riekie says.

Nyalas graze among the chalets, which are surrounded by natural vegetation, and if you’re lucky you might see the two resident klipspringers at the pool.
