lternative medicine has a complex history, dating back to the earliest efforts of humans attempting to relieve pain and heal one another. Many people with good intentions employed folk remedies with, long associated with health fraud, originated from the German , meaning a seller of nostrums, medical cures of dubious or secretive origins. Unregulated practitioners came to be called quacks during the Middle Ages because they hawked their wares on street corners and at country fairs with cries resembling noisy ducks or geese.
