To be honest, I actually felt a bit fraudulent going into a shop that sold electric bikes—and only electric bikes. I consider myself a fairly fit and healthy 49-year-old, smack-bang in the middle of MAMIL territory, and the thought of needing assistance other than that provided by my lungs and legs felt like a betrayal. Up until a year or so ago, when I saw others on e-bikes, I said to myself rather superciliously, “Hey, that’s not cycling! That’s, er, um, well … something else.”
