While testing the MacBook Air, I was struck by a thought: what if Apple had planned for this to have been the updated 13in MacBook Pro with an M2 chip? After all, it has a larger screen and better speakers than the new MacBook Pro (see overleaf), while the M2 chip inside both machines offers near identical performance.

Then consider the limited number of finishes – all rather staid and professional – that the MacBook Air comes in. Four shades of grey springs to mind. The final piece of evidence is the price, with the M2 MacBook Air starting at £1,249 compared to the £999 of previous MacBook Airs (the M1 version is still on sale for £999).
