Our family lived on the South Plains of West Texas near the small town of Brownfield. My grandfather, J.R. Davis (I called him Pampa), owned a section of farmland that was mostly planted in cotton. Maize was a secondary crop. He always planted a “truck patch” of vegetables and corn near the irrigation well. When I was a young girl, I officially sat between Daddy (Hershel Davis) and Pampa on the front seat whenever we drove around the farm or to town.
