The UK’s next-generation research ship

The British research vessel RRS Sir David Attenborough is half way through its first year of service with the British Antarctic Survey (BAS). Commissioned by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), it was built for BAS as a next-generation polar marine science platform for research work in both Antarctica and the Arctic, and is also designed to undertake logistics support of BAS’ five research stations.

Funding for her construction was announced by the UK Government in 2014, with the intention that it would replace the UK’s two previous and the logistics ship . The first steel for the ship (yard no.1390) was cut at Cammell Laird’s yard in Birkenhead in July 2016, with a keel-laying ceremony on 17 October 2016.
