Someone who should know – someone who was once very senior at Number Ten – told me, more than two years ago, that Boris Johnson’s premiership was bound to end in tears.

‘Why’s that?’ I asked. Given that Boris had just secured a thumping big majority in the 2019 general election, it seemed a bit unlikely at the time.
