Creating the perfect palette can be a daunting prospect. After all, none of us want to bear the risk of wasting time, effort and materials on a project that doesn’t come together quite like we’d hoped. Luckily, whether you’re an instinctual shade-pairer or lean on colour theory to do the hard work for you, there’s plenty of inspiration to be found when pulling fabrics for any project.

On the colours they’re naturally drawn to, our nine makers offered a kaleidoscope of hues. Quilter and fabric designer Lysa Flower’s instinct is rooted in her childhood distaste for a certain stereotypically feminine colour… “As a girl, I felt pink was forced on me. By seven I had made the declaration that yellow was my favourite colour, not pink.
