Growing crops for essential oils

Essential oil crops have volatile (easily evaporated at normal temperatures) aromatic oils in certain parts of the plant. Examples include lavender, rose geranium, rosemary, basil, thyme, peppermint, chamomile, eucalyptus, and buchu.

Essential oils are used in the flavouring, pharmaceutical and fragrance industries for manufacturing products such as beverages, detergents, perfumes and medicines.

Most of the essential oil crops produced in South Africa are grown in KwaZuluNatal, the Eastern Cape, the Western Cape, and the Lowveld regions of Mpumalanga and Limpopo. They are also produced in the cooler, high-lying regions of Gauteng and the Free State.

Some of these crops can tolerate frost, while others are sensitive to cold weather and cannot withstand frost.
