Lessons in Chemistry
BY BONNIE GARMUS
lizabeth Zott is an excellent chemist, just not in the eyes of any of the men she works with, although that doesn’t stop them stealing her work or picking her brain every chance they get. Calvin Evans is different, though. Widely regarded as a genius and almost equally widely disliked, Calvin really sees her – and Elizabeth recognises a kindred soul. She moves in with him, offering to cook every day in exchange for her lodgings. Elizabeth is a fabulous cook, perhaps because she approaches each meal as a chemical experiment: ‘Combine. I am laying out the barest bones of a fantastic debut novel here: Bonnie Garmus has created unforgettable characters and tells a completely original story in a singular, intelligent voice. I absolutely loved it and really cannot recommend it highly enough.
