MY QUEST FOR GRAND PARADE’S NAMEPLATE

s darkness fell on the evening of Friday December 10 1937, ‘A3’ class ‘Pacific’ No. 2744 (later No. 60090) was involved in a serious accident at Castlecary between Edinburgh and Glasgow. It was hauling the 4.03pm express passenger train from Waverley station when at more than 60mph it ran into the back of the 2pm Dundee to Glasgow train, pulled by ‘D29’ 4-4-0 . The cause of the collision was a combination of snow, bad light and signalman’s error. Its force was such that the Dundee train, which had overrun signals in the poor conditions but had come to a stop, was pushed forward 50 yards. Thirty-five passengers were killed – 29men and six women – and 179 was severely damaged but, miraculously, its crew was spared thanks to the fact that the tender had a solid steel front.
